Making a Trick Entertaining

January 16, 2017

Adding a story/routine to your effects makes them much more entertaining to your audience, and more fun for you to perform. It gives you a chance to show off your amazing imagination - This is why you can only get a black sticker by adding a routine.

Here are a few tips for a good routine:

  • Make it original - Use your imagination to come up with patter which is different to everyone else’s.

  • Make a routine you enjoy - If you enjoy performing the trick, the audience will like it more!

  • Make it a good length (Not to short - Not too long) - Make the patter long enough to get the storyline across, but not so long that it becomes boring or long winded, or the trick becomes anticlimactic.

Here are some ideas for constructing a basic routine to get you started:

  • Where did the prop come from? - Make up where you got/found the prop you are using in the trick. Did you get given it? Did it come from a distant planet?

  • Why is the magic happening? - Do you have magic powers? Is the room you are in haunted? Does the prop have special scientific properties?

  • Can you combine it with another trick? - A trick can become much more entertaining when you coming it with other effects. For example, after you've made a sponge gal vanish, you could make it re-appear in a magical way!
